Case study: sexscenes.info
“Sex Scenes” is a comic and erotic story about a young woman filmmaker who sets out to make a sophisticated, edgy, sexy but arty film in today’s corporate Hollywood — it’s about her, and about how her project effects the people she encounters along the way. A comic (but sexy) picaresque adventure story, in other words.
We were commissioned for the graphical concept of this project by Ray Sawhill, and we worked from scratch providing the direction, logo design, web design and custom Squarespace theme.
Before designing website, we started with the branding process. The idea is to have a visually appealing typography only logo based on the type treatment popular in late 60 – 70. Swirly lines and bold characters along with strong color did the trick, and here is result:

When logo has been finished we proceed to website design. Our main point of reference was ’60s and ’70s art-erotica movies, and we needed a website to remind visitors of those movies.
Splash page needed to look like a movie poster or book jacket. We created a vector image of a nude girl holding a movie camera in one hand. General idea was that back in the ’70s she’d have been the girl onscreen. Now “the girl” is also the movie maker.
Ok, done:

On all other pages, we added both the horizontal, top-of-the-page navigation bar and the secondary (vertical) column:

And here is Ray’s feedback:
Gorgeous, love it, thanks to all for great work.
